Suggestions

We are sorry that you have lost your pet and understand that you are upset. We have prepared the following suggestions to help you find your missing friend. Please spend a few minutes reading them.
  1. Come to the Animal Shelter in person. Visit within two days of losing your pet, and come at least twice a week thereafter.

  2. Return to look as often as possible. We are required to hold stray animals ONLY 72 hours, though we try to hold them longer. Stray animals sometimes arrive weeks or months after they first disappear.

  3. Look through our kennels yourself. Collars and tags are easily lost, and you are the only one who can positively identify your pet.

  4. Check the Found Column in local newspapers daily.

  5. File a lost report in the office.

  6. Check all neighboring animal shelters as soon as possible. Your pet can run fast and far. Pets are often found by people and taken to the shelter nearest their home.

  7. Call the shelter at least every other day.

  8. Search for your pet. Canvass your neighborhood on foot, by car, during the day and at night. Look in garages, yards, basements, closets, under cars, in shrubbery, and at neighbors' homes, as well as your own.

  9. Call and whistle to your pet. She may be injured, frightened, or trapped and unable to come to you. Hearing your voice may encourage your pet to answer you. Remain in one place long enough for your animal to find you after you call.

  10. Post lost pet notices on bulletin boards in stores, churches, libraries, and around your neighborhood. Include the pet's name, description, a photograph, and your name, address, and phone number.

  11. Advertise in all local newspapers. Some run free lost pet columns, others will charge. Offer a reward, if you like, but do not specify the amount.

  12. Contact local radio stations. Some will make an announcement for you.

  13. Listen to those radio stations that make found pet announcements.

  14. Contact breed clubs if your pet is purebred. They may have information about your animal.

  15. Check with local veterinarian hospitals to see if your animal has been injured.

  16. Tell friends, neighbors, kids, babysitters, mail carriers, etc., that your pet is missing.
